Robben Island

Robben Island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site situated 6.9 kilometres off the coast of Cape Town in Table Bay. For nearly 400 years, the island served as a place of banishment, isolation, and imprisonment, most notably housing anti-apartheid leaders including Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu, and Ahmed Kathrada during South Africa’s struggle for freedom.

Weather, ferry operations, and timing

Ferry sailings are weather-dependent. High winds, heavy swells, or thick fog in Table Bay can lead to sailing delays or cancellations. Morning tours generally offer calmer sea conditions. If a ferry is cancelled due to weather, tickets can be rescheduled or refunded by the museum.
