How long should you allow?

Allow a full day of 5 to 9 hours, as the drive from Cape Town takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours each way via the scenic Clarence Drive or Sir Lowry’s Pass. Hermanus is also a highly recommended weekend stay option.

Weather and seasonal timing

Whales migrate to Walker Bay to mate and calve from June to November, with peak activity in September and October. Warm clothing is essential, as Walker Bay is exposed to cold sea breezes, even during sunny days.

Build it into a regional route

Pair Hermanus with a stop at Stony Point Penguin Colony in Betty’s Bay on the return journey along the coastal Clarence Drive, or link it with a visit to the Hemel-en-Aarde wine valley.
