Penguins & Peaks: The Curious Travel Couple’s Cape Town Escape

The Curious Travel Couple’s Cape Town day moves from the summit of Table Mountain to the maritime character of Simon’s Town and the wild, watchful world of Boulders Beach.

A compact Cape Town day with two very different horizons

The route in one glance

The video follows a simple Cape Town contrast: rise above the city on the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway, then head south to Simon’s Town and Boulders Beach. It is an easy route to understand, but not a route to rush. Cableway weather, Peninsula traffic, conservation fees, tides and penguin etiquette all shape the day.

Watch Penguins & Peaks

Three destinations, one strong Cape Town day

Table Mountain supplies the cinematic beginning: the rotating cable car, the plateau and the city spreading towards two coastlines. Keep the ascent flexible because the Cableway can close in bad weather, and use the official access guidance for the free shuttle, MyCiTi connections and wheelchair routes.

Simon’s Town changes the mood. Its preserved streets, naval history, harbour setting and coastal atmosphere make it more than a waypoint on the way to the penguins. Give the town time to breathe rather than treating it as a car park between attractions.

Boulders Beach brings the wildlife encounter. SANParks manages a protected African penguin colony with viewing areas and boardwalks designed to keep visitors and birds safely apart. Stay on marked routes, never touch or feed the penguins and check current conservation fees and entry conditions before travelling.

Planning the route well

Best shape
Start with Table Mountain if the weather is clear, then travel south for Simon’s Town and Boulders. If the mountain is closed, reverse the day or keep the Cableway for another weather window.
Transport
A private vehicle, guided route or carefully timed transfer is the most practical way to combine the city and Peninsula. Traffic can make the return much slower than the map suggests.
Accessibility
The Cableway publishes wheelchair routes, ramps, elevators and paved summit pathways. SANParks also publishes accessibility information for Boulders and the surrounding national-park facilities; confirm the exact route and surface conditions before arrival.
Wildlife safety
Penguins are wild and endangered animals. Keep distance, do not feed or touch them, and keep to the boardwalks and marked viewing areas.

Frequently asked questions

Can I combine Table Mountain and Boulders Beach in one day?

Yes, but it is a long day. Start with the Cableway only if the weather is favourable, allow time for the drive south and keep Boulders’ closing time and traffic in mind.

Do I need to visit Simon’s Town separately from Boulders Beach?

They are close, but different experiences. Simon’s Town adds maritime history, streets and harbour character; Boulders adds the protected penguin colony and boardwalk viewing.

Are the penguins safe to approach?

No. Keep to the boardwalks and marked viewing areas, never touch or feed the penguins, and follow SANParks’ current visitor rules.
