Destination Story

About Cape Point

Cape Point is the dramatic, wind-sculpted cliff peninsula at the southwestern tip of the African continent, situated within the Cape of Good Hope section of Table Mountain National Park. It is renowned for high sea cliffs, panoramic ocean views, historic lighthouses, rich fynbos vegetation, and diverse wildlife.

Why visit Cape Point?

Cape Town Tourism and SANParks highlight Cape Point as one of South Africa’s primary natural attractions. The reserve protects over 7,700 hectares of indigenous flora and fauna where the Atlantic atmosphere meets the dramatic coastal cliffs of the Peninsula.

What to see and do

  • Walk or ride to the historic lighthouse: Take the Flying Dutchman Funicular or walk the paved path to the upper 1860 lighthouse for views over False Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.
  • Visit the Cape of Good Hope: Drive or walk down to the famous wooden sign marking the most southwestern point of the African continent.
  • Hike coastal fynbos trails: Explore the Lighthouse Keepers Trail, Diaz Beach pathway, or Shipwreck Trail for wild coastal scenery away from the main parking area.
  • Observe native wildlife: Watch for chacma baboons, bontebok, Cape mountain zebras, ostriches, and seasonal southern right whales off the coast.
  • Dine at Two Oceans Restaurant: Enjoy seafood and regional dishes with views over False Bay.

How long should you allow?

Allow 4 to 7 hours for a complete Cape Point visit, including travel time from central Cape Town. When paired with nearby Boulders Beach and Simon’s Town, it forms a classic full-day Cape Peninsula loop.

Weather and timing

Morning is the best time to arrive to beat peak visitor traffic and secure parking. Strong winds (the “Cape Doctor”) often pick up in the afternoon during summer. Bring a jacket even on warm days, as coastal weather can change rapidly.

Build it into a South Peninsula route

Cape Point pairs naturally with Boulders Beach, Simon’s Town, and Chapman’s Peak Drive for a complete coastal loop returning via the Atlantic Seaboard or Southern Suburbs.

Planning notes

  • SANParks conservation entry fees apply at the gate; keep your entry ticket for exit.
  • Baboons in the reserve are wild and habituated to food; keep all food sealed and do not feed or approach wildlife.
  • Wear sturdy walking shoes if planning to descend to Diaz Beach or walk the cliff paths.
