Whale Season Guide: What to Know Before You Go

A local's guide to whale watching season along the Cape Peninsula.

Southern right whales arrive in False Bay around June and stay through November. But not every year is equal. 2024 was a strong season, with multiple mother-calf pairs spotted from the cliffs above Fish Hoek. 2023 was quieter on the False Bay side but exceptional near De Kelders.

The best viewing is free, from cliff paths above the water. Hermanus is well-known but Gordon’s Bay and Smitswinkel Bay offer sightings with none of the crowds.
