Destination Story

About Super Fisheries

Super Fisheries on Old Klipfontein Road in Athlone is the undisputed birthplace of the Gatsby sandwich. In 1976, shop owner Rashaad Pandy needed a quick, filling meal for a team of workers renovating his fish shop. He filled a round Portuguese loaf with polony, slap chips, and atchar.

One worker exclaimed it was “a Gatsby smash!” (referencing the film *The Great Gatsby* screening in theatres at the time), and a Cape Town legend was born.

Today, visitors make pilgrimages to Super Fisheries to experience the authentic original: fresh ocean fish straight from Cape waters, golden hot slap chips, and tangy spicy mango atchar piled high inside crisp French bread loaves.
