Cape Town Destination
Lion’s Head
Hike the dramatic spiral trail around Lion’s Head for 360-degree panoramic views of Table Mountain, Camps Bay, the Atlantic Seaboard, and the City Bowl.
About Lion’s Head
Lion’s Head is the striking peak standing 669 metres above sea level between Table Mountain and Signal Hill. Known for its distinct conical shape and spiralling ascent, it offers unmatched 360-degree views of Cape Town, Table Bay, Camps Bay, the Twelve Apostles, and the open Atlantic Ocean.
Why hike Lion’s Head?
Lion’s Head is Cape Town’s most popular short mountain hike. Because the path spirals around the peak as you ascend, hikers get constantly changing viewpoints of every angle of the city and coast.
What to see and do
- Experience the 360-degree spiral climb: Enjoy shifting views of the City Bowl, Atlantic Seaboard, Robben Island, and Table Mountain as you ascend.
- Choose your route section: Near the top, choose between the adventurous staple-and-chain climb or the gentler non-chain contour bypass path.
- Reach the summit panorama: Relax on the rocky summit plateau for unbroken views across the entire Cape Peninsula.
- Catch sunrise or sunset: Watch the sun rise over the Hottentots Holland Mountains or set into the Atlantic ocean horizon.
- Popular full-moon hikes: Join locals for traditional full-moon evening climbs (requires headlamps and group safety precautions).
How long should you allow?
Allow 2.5 to 4 hours for the complete hike, including 1.5 hours to ascend, time on the summit, and 1 hour for the descent.
Weather, safety, and timing
Start early in summer to avoid climbing in direct sun during the heat of the day. Avoid hiking during heavy rain, high winds, or thick mist, as rock surfaces near the summit can become slippery. Always carry a charged phone and emergency numbers.
Build it into a Cape Town itinerary
Combine a sunrise hike up Lion’s Head with breakfast in Sea Point or Clifton Beach, or pair a late afternoon hike with dinner along the Camps Bay strip.
Planning notes
- No entry fee or permit required, but SANParks rangers patrol the mountain; stick to marked trails at all times.
- Wear proper hiking shoes with good grip; flip-flops and fashion sneakers are unsafe on the upper rock sections.
- Carry at least 1.5 litres of water per person, sunscreen, a hat, and a headlamp if hiking near sunset.

What to keep in mind before you travel.
Lion’s Head is a real mountain trail, not an urban stroll. Ensure proper footwear, bring at least 1.5 litres of water, check weather, and use the non-chain contour route if unaccustomed to heights or steep scrambles.
